Daily Tip: Add Pocket Read It Later Links to WordPress Posts

If you’re a fan of the Pocket ‘Read It’ Later service, you may want to consider getting your WordPress site hooked up to it. Pocket is a free service that lets you access your personal reading list at a more convenient time on your iPhone, iPad, Android, Kindle Fire or in your browser.

Pocket Read It Later Links is a new plugin that automatically adds a “Read It Later” button to your WordPress posts. Here’s how the buttons look when added to your posts:

This is especially useful for sites with lengthy blog posts. You can even add your own custom CSS to change the placement of the button. Download the Pocket Read It Later Links plugin for free from the WordPress repository.

Daily Tip: Approve or Delete WordPress Comments With an iPhone App

If your email box is full of comment notifications from WordPress, you may need a new system for managing discussion on your site(s). The team at Notificare is rethinking how we interact with these notifications.

It takes time to log into your WordPress dashboard to approve or delete comments. Notificare is a plugin that works with an app on your phone to notify you of new comments on your sites. You can approve comments or mark as spam with a simple push of a button from your phone – no need to log in!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by a constantly full inbox, Notificare will help you to get that under control. It makes it fast and convenient for managing WordPress comments from your mobile device. Notificare also incorporates a few other services, such as beanstalk, SendGrid, Twitter and github. In the coming days they will be adding the ability for you to create your own services.

I’m hoping they will also make an Android app as well, but for right now it’s only available for iPhone and iPad users. Notificare is currently in private beta. Watch for it in the iPhone app store and make sure to request an invitation to Notificare on the service’s website.

Cool WordPress shortcode plugins to snap your blog into style

Do you like to style content on your WordPress blog and make it look real pretty? Are you NOT a whiz with css? Then, here are some quick and easy shortcode solutions for you!

WordPress Shortcode Plugins

Shortcodes are, imho, one of the best things to happen to WordPress. They allow you to do all kinds of cool things on your blog with just a few mouse clicks; like create beautiful buttons, boxes, columns and tabs. Today, I’d like to share 3 of my favorite shortcode plugins to do just that, and then some… check out #3 on the list; it’s awesome!

#1 – J-Shortcodes

J-Shortcodes is one of the simplest plugins available for buttons, tabs and the like.

  • Uses pure CSS to achieve effects like hover and active states for buttons
  • A real lightweight when it comes to page load times
  • Combine and nest the shortcodes to create truly unique WordPress layouts.

Speaking of layouts, have you ever struggled to get your post content “just so” in nicely arranged columns or boxes? Fret no more. The J-Columns and J-Boxes shortcodes enable you to create custom layouts in your posts, pages and widgets. You can use them in divs, tables, lists… just about anywhere.

#2 – TheTheFly Shortcodes for tabs and accordions

Tabbed shortcode outputTheTheFly (weird name, I know) has some fully customizable shortcodes for tabs, as well as both vertical and horizontal accordions. The output of these shortcodes also inherits the styles of your current WordPress theme, so no futzing around required.

Customization is accomplished with a whole slew of parameters you can define in the shortcode:

  • Title
  • Speed
  • Style
  • Collapsible
  • Animated
  • Autoheight
  • Autoplay
  • Pauseonhover
  • …and many more

#3 – Shortcodes Ultimate… for just about everything!

The Shortcodes Ultimate plugin deserves its name. Pretty much anything can be accomplished with this WordPress plugin. All shortcodes and custom parameters can be defined in a modal window that pops up when you click the “Add shortcode” icon available above your post editor.
